LED Lighting FAQ
IC-4 rated LEDs are safe, efficient, dimmable, and long-lasting. We ensure compliance, ideal brightness, colour temperature, and proper installation—indoors or outdoors.
Yes—but only if they are IC-4 rated. In Australia, only IC-4 certified downlights (as per AS/NZS 60598.2.2) can be safely covered by insulation. These fittings are thermally protected and prevent fire hazards. McGuire’s installs only compliant IC-4 models with a minimum 3-year manufacturer warranty.
It refers to the colour temperature (Kelvin rating) of the light:
- Warm White (2700–3000K): Soft, yellowish light – ideal for bedrooms and living room
- Cool White (4000K): Neutral, clean light – great for kitchens, laundries, and bathrooms.
- Daylight (5000–6500K): Bright, blue-white – often used in workshops or task lighting.
Tri-colour downlights (adjustable via switch) are available to let you test and choose.
We generally allow one LED downlight per 1.2 to 1.5 m², but it depends on ceiling height, room use, and desired brightness (lux).
As per AS/NZS 1680, recommended average lux levels are:
- Living rooms: 150–300 lux
- Kitchens / worktops: 300–500 lux
- Bathrooms: 200–300 lux
- Study areas: 400+ lux
We offer custom lighting layouts to suit.
Yes, if both the LED fitting and driver are dimmable. McGuire’s supplies leading-edge or trailing-edge compatible dimmers depending on your circuit. We always test compatibility on-site, as mismatched dimmers can cause flicker or reduced lifespan.
All dimmers and lights comply with AS/NZS 61347 and must be SAA-approved.
Absolutely.
A 10W LED replaces a 50W halogen, saving up to 80% on running costs. Running 10 halogens for 4 hours/day = approx. $160/year
The same in LEDs = approx. $30/year Savings are even higher with motion sensors or timers.
Not usually, unless your board lacks RCD (safety switch) protection or has outdated fuses. All lighting circuits must be RCD-protected (AS/NZS 3000:2018, Clause 2.6.3.2). We’ll check your switchboard during the quote and recommend upgrades if required for compliance.
Yes—but only if they are correctly IP-rated and installed.
- Kitchens (kickboards, overheads): IP20–IP44 depending on splash zone.
- Bathrooms:
- Zone 1 (shower recess): Minimum IPX4
- Zone 2 (perimeter): IPX1–X4
We install sealed LED strips with compliant drivers in cabinetry or behind pelmets.
Up to 50,000 hours—that’s over 10 years with regular residential use. Unlike halogens, LEDs degrade slowly over time rather than failing suddenly. We only install lights from trusted brands like SAL, HPM, or Clipsal, backed by manufacturer warranties of 3–7 years.
Currently, WA does not offer residential LED rebates, but commercial customers may be eligible through schemes like the Energy Efficiency Opportunities program or via Green Building Council credits for retrofit projects. We can help commercial clients assess eligibility for maintenance cost reductions and insurance benefits from thermal imaging & lighting upgrades.
Yes, if the fitting is designed for continuous use and is IP-rated.
- IP65 or higher recommended for garden and wall lighting
- Low-wattage (3–7W) LEDs are ideal for dusk-to-dawn operation
- Optional motion sensors or timers help reduce usage
All fittings we supply are rated for long operation and backed by AS/NZS 60598 compliance.
