Power Point Installation FAQ
Power point installations must be done by licensed electricians to ensure legal compliance, safety, proper circuit protection, and compatibility with wall types and modern devices.
Yes—always. In WA, only licensed electricians can legally install, relocate or alter power points. This is mandated by Electricity (Licensing) Regulations 1991 and AS/NZS 3000. DIY is illegal and dangerous—insurance won’t cover you in the event of a fire.
Usually yes—but it depends on access and wall type. For brick walls, we use wall chasing and conduits or surface-mount ducting. For stud walls, we feed cables inside the cavity. We’ll check for clearance, structural framing and nearby plumbing or gas lines before installation.
- Double GPO: Standard two-socket outlet
- Quad GPO: Four sockets in a single plate – perfect behind TVs, desks or kitchen benches
Both types must comply with AS/NZS 3112, and McGuire’s only installs SAA-certified fittings.
Yes, if installed correctly and from trusted brands.
We use outlets with:
- Short-circuit protection
- Overload protection
- Smart charge detection
- Certified to AS/NZS 60950 or AS/NZS IEC 62368
We recommend USB-A + USB-C combos for future-proof charging.
This depends on the circuit breaker rating and expected load.
Typically:
- 10A circuit: up to 8 double outlets (light usage)
- 20A circuit: more outlets or appliance-specific use
We always calculate the total demand (VA) and balance circuits to prevent overload.
Yes mandatory. Under AS/NZS 3000 Clause 2.6.3, every new or altered socket outlet must be protected by a residual current device (RCD). If your switchboard doesn’t have one, we’ll advise on RCD retrofitting as part of the quote.
Yes—we use IP56-rated GPOs suitable for alfresco, garage or garden use.
We install:
- Proper mounting blocks
- Silicone sealant
- Conduit protection
- Compliant RCD protection for all external circuits
This keeps you safe from rain, dust, and corrosion
Per AS/NZS 3000, GPOs must be:
- At least 150mm above benches
- 600mm horizontally from sinks or cooktops (Zone 2 safety clearance)
- NOT directly above a cooktop or sink basin
We ensure your layout is fully compliant and practical.
Can you install weatherproof outdoor outlets?Yes, if the fitting is designed for continuous use and is IP-rated.
- IP65 or higher recommended for garden and wall lighting
- Low-wattage (3–7W) LEDs are ideal for dusk-to-dawn operation
- Optional motion sensors or timers help reduce usage
All fittings we supply are rated for long operation and backed by AS/NZS 60598 compliance.
Usually 30–60 minutes per outlet, depending on wall type and access.
